It’s time to change Louisville’s climate story. Once known for rising urban heat, Louisville can become a model for a healthy, climate-ready city. By building on our strengths—water, land, location and leadership—we can create a more livable and attractive city.

In 2016 Dr. Brian Stone of the Georgia Institute of Technology co-authored a foundational study, "Louisville Urban Heat Management Study," identifying Louisville as having the fastest-growing urban heat island in the U.S. at that time. The research found that a combination of tree canopy expansion and cool roof technologies could mitigate temperature increases.

Brian Stone's profile pictureIn 2025, as part of the Greenprint Initiative, UofL’s Envirome Institute and TreesLouisville re-engaged Dr. Stone to do a follow-up study to see how conditions have changed over time. Louisville is the first city in the U.S. to do this sort of follow-up study.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Stone back to Louisville on Wednesday to share the results of the latest study.

This talk will highlight our climate challenges, present new heat data and propose strategies to enhance urban livability through investments in climate resilience.

Coffee and pastries will be served.
