Interview: UofL Masters of Urban Planning Capstone - Russell Neighborhood

Continuing our Commencement week series on Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, sits down with representatives from UofL's Master of Urban Planning (MUP) program's recent Capstone Studio project, “Engaging Youth in Planning and Design: A Pilot Project with Western Middle School.” UofL professor of Urban & Public Affairs, Dr. Kelly Kinahan, joins us along with two Masters students about to graduate: Rachel Casey, and Matthew Rehmer.

The 2019 Capstone project was a collaboration with students in Lindsey Shewmaker’s 8th-grade science class at Western Middle School and Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Housing and Community Development. MUP students facilitated a 6-week youth engagement process with students toward the goal of deciding how to invest $50,000 of Community Development Block Grant funding in the Russell neighborhood. Our conversation covers the engagement process and the youth-led ideas for a vacant lot re-design.
