Sierra Club ranks UofL "Coolest School" in Kentucky

On August 22, 2017, it was revealed that UofL ranked #51 (out of 229) in Sierra Club's 2017 Cool Schools list.

With a total score of 607.77 (out of a possible 1000), UofL continues to be ranked above any other school in Kentucky (Western Kentucky University ranks 56th; and Berea College is 91st).

  • UofL continues to be ranked above any other school in Kentucky (WKU is 56th; Berea is 91st) and, indeed, the entire region (except, perhaps, Appalachian State University at 42nd).
  • This is not the highest UofL has ever ranked in the list (#41 in 2011, #43 in 2016), but it is higher than 2013-15.
  • This ranking is based on the AASHE STARS data that we collected back in 2015, so it’s not the most up-to-date snapshot. (Also, each year, the schools choosing to participate change and the scoring system changes a bit.)
  • UofL aced the categories of Co-Curricular Sustainability Initiatives and Innovation in Sustainability.
  • UofL scored particularly well in the categories of Food, Planning, and Waste.
  • UofL missed the most points in the categories of Fossil Fuel Divestment, Energy, Investments, Academics, Purchasing, Transportation, and Water
