Commuting Heroes: Rachel Singel (National Bike Challenge), Steffany Gayton & Jolisha Hines (Cards Commuter Challenge)
As we enter the homestretch of the five-month 2021 National Bike Challenge, and the mid-point of the five-week Cards Commuter Challenge 2021, UofL staff, faculty, and students continue to pedal their bicycles for fun, fitness, and sustainable, healthy, non-polluting transportation.
Team UofL continues to make its mark on this year's National Bike Challenge and it is not too late for you to join the Team, win prizes, and show your support for a healthy lifestyle and sustainable transportation! Register for the National Bike Challenge and Join Team UofL as an individual to compete against your peers. Simply log your trips by bicycle for fun, fitness, or transportation. Your miles and days cycled will qualify you for great prizes through Get Healthy Now, including the grand prize of a $400 voucher to a local bike shop, co-sponsored by UofL's Sustainability Council! The National Bike Challenge is open to everyone, however the Get Healthy Now competition is restricted to UofL employees, retirees, and their spouses/qualifying adults.
And while you are logging your bike commutes, you can "double-dip" on the chances to win by also participating in the Cards Commuter Challenge 2021, which is designed to encourage everyone at UofL to explore alternatives to driving alone to campus, whether it is by bike, bus, walking, carpool, skating, or telecommuting. Record your trips on Cardinal Directions throughout the Cards Commuter Challenge (August 30 - September 30) and each week you'll have the chance to win one of the $50 weekly prizes or the $250 Grand Prize! One student and one faculty/staff member will win each week! Any trip by means other than driving alone increases your chances of winning!
In just over two weeks, participants logged 4,020 miles over 355 trips on foot, bike, skates, bus, carpool, or telecommuting, mitigating 2,997 lbs of carbon pollution. Congrats to our second $50 weekly winners: IRB Analyst Steffany Gayton who avoided 160 miles of driving to/from campus by teleworking over four days last week, and Arts & Sciences undergrad, Jolisha Hines, who avoided 94 miles of driving to/from campus by teleworking over all seven days last week. Join them in the Cards Commuter Challenge and you could be the next winner to tap into $750 in prizes through the end of the month. Log your trips at Cardinal Directions to win.
The National Bike Challenge results for August are in and UofL riders racked up 30,756 miles over 1,941 rides since the Challenge began on May 1st. That includes 2,076 miles of biking for transportation, which equates to 1,334 pounds of heat-trapping gases kept out of the atmosphere to keep us all a little cooler.
Individual Team UofL riders posted some impressive stats in August 2021. For the fourth month in a row, our 2020 Grand Champ, Kamila Bujko, continued to dominate, racking up the most miles (1,052) and trips by bicycle (33), followed by our July winner, Associate Athletic Trainer for UofL's women's basketball team, Yoshi Saito (25 trips for 674 miles). UofL's car-free Assistant to the Provost for Sustainability Initiatives, Justin Mog, continued to dominate the bike commuter category, pedaling 320 miles for transportation over 27 days in August.
But this month's prize goes to our most improved bike commuter, Fine Arts professor, Rachel Singel, who commuted by bike for 130 miles over 24 days in August! This impressive feat moved Rachel up to 2nd place in the Top Commuter category, 3rd place in the Most Trips category, 4th place among Top Female Riders, and 13th place in the Most Miles category for August!
