The Department of Sociology's annual Rieger Speaker series, centering on the theme of racial justice, equity, and inclusion in higher education, presents a talk by Dr. Antar Tichavakunda titled 'Learning About Belonging Through Black Joy.' This year's focus aims to explore the imperative of achieving and nurturing a sense of belonging in higher education amidst shifting political landscapes. Drawing from his research on Black student experiences, Tichavakunda will illuminate valuable insights into fostering a sense of belonging within the evolving and often divisive landscape of higher education. Antar A. Tichavakunda, Assistant Professor at the University of California Santa Barbara, published Black Campus Life: The Worlds Black Students Make at a Historically White Institution, with SUNY Press. The focus of the 2024 Rieger Speaker series is on racial justice, equity, and inclusion in higher education, under the theme "Achieving and Fostering a Sense of Belonging in Higher Education in a Changing Political World." The co-sponsors are the Liberal Studies Program & the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research.
