UofL collaborates with Team Desert Phoenix to compete in 2021 Solar Decathlon Middle East

Team Desert Phoenix is a diverse team from four institutions - University of Louisville, American University in Dubai, Higher Colleges of Technology, and American University of Sharjah - competing in the prestigious Solar Decathlon Middle East competition (SDME 2021), which will run from October 20 to November 21, 2021. The competition, featuring 14 international teams, will be held at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, UAE.

Team Desert Phoenix, comprised of students and faculty, will design, build, and operate a sustainable 1000 square foot solar-powered home. A major focus for the teams will be protecting the environment and considering the climate and culture of the region. The eco-friendly house will blend architectural styles reflecting local heritage and innovative engineering excellence, with a focus on sustainability. The competition is based on 7 pillars, including: Sustainability, Future, Innovation, Clean Energy, Mobility, Smart Solutions, and Happiness.

Once built, all team houses will be displayed in a public showcase in Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai and compete in the decathlon. Awards are given in 10 categories, including Energy Management, Engineering & Construction, Architecture, Sustainability, Mobility, House Functioning, Communication, Energy Efficiency, Innovation, and Comfort Conditions. An additional 4 awards are granted in excellence categories, including Smart Solutions, Building Integrated Photovoltaics, Interior Design, and the People's Choice Award.
