A community for everyone
There truly is a community for everyone here at UofL, and it all begins with our Living-Learning (LLC) and Themed (TC) communities! LLCs and TCs are located throughout our twelve residence halls on Belknap Campus. Students live together while accessing academic and staff support, leadership opportunities, and other resources tailored to their interest or goal. In addition, LLC members participate in courses together.
What's the difference?
LLCs are designed for students who share a common academic goal, major, or career path, while TCs bring together students with shared interests, activities, or hobbies.
Both LLC and TC members engage in shared courses or experiential learning opportunities, and all communities actively participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing campus and local community development.
LLCs and TCs offer students the chance to live alongside peers who share similar goals, interests, or passions within specific sections of residence halls. These communities provide a unique environment where members benefit from personalized academic and staff support, leadership development, social activities, and more.
Students in our communities often take select courses together or participate in hands-on learning experiences, creating a more connected educational journey. This past year, nearly 25% of first-year students applied to live in an LLC or TC, highlighting their popularity and impact.

Living-Learning and Themed Community FAQs
The LLC/TC application lives within the housing application which can be found in your CardsNest. Your housing and LLC/TC application will successfully be completed when you’ve submitted the housing application fee.
IMPORTANT: If your housing application has been submitted, you are unable to re-access the application to make any changes to your LLC/TC preferences. If you wish to update your preferences, please email housing@louisville.edu and you will be directed to the LLC/TC Team for your next steps.
The LLC/TC agreement you complete is an application; it does not guarantee you a spot in the LLC/TC. Once your application has been processed by a member of the Resident Learning team, an email will be sent to your UofL email with the details of your acceptance (or if you’ve been waitlisted or denied).
Your preferences are reviewed in chronological order, meaning, your first preference is reviewed then processed. If you are:
- Waitlisted for your first preference: Your 2nd preference, if one was indicated, will be active for review. If you are approved for your 2nd preference and are later approved for your 1st preference, you must confirm which community you would like to participate in.
- Denied for your first preference: your 2nd preference, if one was indicated, will be active for review.
You and your preferred roommate must BOTH be accepted into the same LLC/TC in order for you room together. Prior to your LLC/TC acceptance as roommates, you must first create a Roommate Group. To do so, please log into CardsNest and select Application. Then, select the correct term's application and choose “Roommate Groups" from the drop down. Follow the instructions to be able to successfully select a roommate(s).
If you are accepted into an LLC/TC but your preferred roommate is not, you will not be able to view or self-assign into the LLC/TC during the self-selection process. You will need to remove yourself from your roommate group if you wish to participate in the LLC/TC.
If the your goal is to stay with specific roommates, all members of the group must apply for the LLC/TC and meet eligibility requirements. The students original LLC/TC assignment takes priority over roommate group preferences.
If you are approved for a Living-Learning or Themed Community (LLC/TC), the Housing Assignments Team will manually place you into a room within that community.
Because LLC/TC placements are completed manually, you do not need to participate in room selection or LLC/TC self-selection. Our team will work to place you with other students in your selected community.
If you have not received confirmation that your LLC/TC application was submitted, first make sure your housing application and housing application fee have been completed successfully. If you are unsure, please contact the Housing Office for assistance.
If you have not yet received a decision on your LLC/TC application, your application is likely still under review. Each application includes open-ended responses that are carefully reviewed by our Resident Learning Team to ensure every student receives thoughtful consideration.
After the initial review process, the Resident Learning Team also works with LLC/TC Advisors, Partners, and Stakeholders to finalize decisions, including approvals, waitlist placements, and denials.
We understand waiting for a decision can feel stressful, and we appreciate your patience as each application is reviewed carefully. Please continue to monitor your university email and follow the published timeline for updates. If you still have concerns after that timeframe, you are welcome to contact us at housing@louisville.edu.
Yes. If you have not yet received a final decision on your LLC/TC application, you should still select a room during your assigned Room Selection timeslot to ensure you secure housing.
Students waiting on an LLC/TC decision should select a room outside of LLC/TC-designated communities. If you are later approved for an LLC/TC, your LLC/TC placement will take priority over your self-selected room assignment and roommate group preferences.
Once LLC/TC assignments are finalized, students approved for an LLC/TC will be reassigned into their designated community by the Housing Assignments Team. We work to complete this process as quickly as possible after reviews and placements are finalized.
Students who wish to make changes to their submitted LLC/TC Housing Application should email housing@louisville.edu. Once the request is received, a member of the Resident Learning Team will review the request and manually update the application as needed.
Please send an email to housing@louisville.edu to indicate that you would like to cancel your LLC/TC assignment.
If a student is approved for an LLC/TC but no longer wishes to participate, they must officially cancel their LLC/TC placement.
Please note that LLC/TC assignments take priority during the housing assignment process. This means students who are approved for an LLC/TC will first be assigned into their LLC/TC community before any cancellation request is processed.
Once the cancellation has been completed, the student will be reassigned to the lowest-cost housing option available based on their classification (first-year or upper-level). After reassignment, the student will be eligible to participate in Room Changes beginning in June.
For the most up-to-date dates and deadlines, please refer to the Timeline for Selection and Retention on the main housing website.
For questions about Living-Learning or Themed Communities (LLC/TCs), students should contact the Resident Learning Team at housing@louisville.edu. Our team can assist with application questions, community information, placement updates, and cancellation requests.
Students are also encouraged to explore the LLC/TC homepage to learn more about each community, eligibility requirements, and available opportunities.
