Comprehensive health coverage helps you stay healthier, manage costs and focus on work and life with greater peace of mind. The elections you make during Open Enrollment are in effect January 1 to December 31 each year unless you experience a qualifying life event. Elections made as a new hire will be effective on the date of hire.
You can make changes to your benefit plans each year during Open Enrollment or within 30 days of a qualifying life event.
Health benefits eligibility overview
Benefits are available to full‑time, regular faculty and staff. For benefits eligibility, full‑time status is defined as working 80% full‑time equivalency (FTE) or greater. Full-time employees receive all benefits including but not limited to, medical benefits, Long Term Disability, employer retirement contribution and tuition remission.

Benefits may be available to part‑time, regular faculty and staff, as outlined by the university’s benefits program. Part‑time employment is defined as working less than 80% full‑time equivalency (FTE).
Note: Part‑time employees pay the applicable part‑time medical premium and are eligible for the same benefits as full‑time employees, with the exception of long‑term disability coverage and the employer retirement contribution. Benefits are available to house staff in accordance with program eligibility guidelines. Eligibility is based on appointed house staff status rather than full‑time equivalency.
Note: House staff pay the FT medical rate and are ineligible to receive Long Term Disability, tuition remission, employer retirement contribution and cannot contribute to a 457(b) plan. For questions about your benefits eligibility, contact Benefits at benefits@louisville.edu.
The following dependents may be eligible for coverage:
Spouses of covered UofL employees.
Qualifying Adult (QA).
Child(ren) (natural children, stepchildren, foster children, legally adopted children and children placed for adoption) until the end of the calendar year in which they turn 26 even if they are married; not living with parents; attending school; not financially dependent on their parents; or eligible to enroll in their employer’s health plan.
Child(ren) of the employee or the employee’s spouse of any age when such children are incapable of self-support because of a total and permanent disability.
Copies of acceptable digital documents can be submitted via Workday within 60 days of your hire date or of your qualifying event.
