Student Spotlight: Lexie Overstreet, BSW student
BSW student, Lexie Overstreet is actively involved with her studies and her work with Planned Parenthood. The undergrad student already has plans to continue her education and pursue a master's in social work and eventually a marriage and family therapy license. “I want to focus on reproductive justice and the first-generation college student experience. I want to become a therapist who focuses on offering attainable and accessible resources to marginalized students.” Lexie’s work outside of the classroom at Planned Parenthood shows her commitment to her interest in reproductive justice.
During the Fall of 2022, Lexie worked as a Voter Engagement Specialist at Planned Parenthood to help coordinate and facilitate canvassing, phone banking, and text banking actions to defeat Amendment 2. Last spring, she lobbied in Frankfort with Planned Parenthood to protect the rights of women, the LGBTQ+ community, and others who could be affected by hostile regressive legislation. She has also been a sex educator with Planned Parenthood for four years. Overstreet has taught K-college lessons on implicit bias, healthy relationships, consent, STD/STI's, reproductive justice, gender, and sexuality.
“My degree at UofL is helping me greatly expand my view of the world and the Kent School's focus on social justice and anti-racism helps make me a better educator and community organizer. I have learned a lot from Dr. Dawson's Intro To Social Work course and love being engaged with the BA program!”
