Students completing the English major will

1. develop skills for analyzing individual texts;
2. develop an understanding of the literary traditions;
3. relate texts to the social,  cultural, and historical contexts in which they were produced;
4. extend, deepen, and refine research and writing skills, particularly the ability to write correctly documented essays;
5. develop an understanding of the nuances of language in both reading and expression.
