The University of Louisville offers a generous tuition remission package for eligible employees and their dependents. The dependent tuition remission program stands out as one of the most generous of all Kentucky public institutions and is highly competitive among peer institutions. Tuition remission is a university benefit that allows employees and their dependents to take courses tuition-free. Eligibility requirements and restrictions apply to both employees and dependents.
Tuition Remission for Employees
Full-time regular/provisional employees
Full-time regular/provisional employees are eligible to take up to two courses at UofL each semester tuition free. Full-time is defined as working 80% of full-time equivalency or greater. Note: Fees are not covered by tuition remission, including fees bundled in tuition.
Part-time regular/provisional employees
Part-time regular/provisional employees and contract faculty are eligible to take one course at UofL each semester tuition free. Part-time is defined as working 40-79% of full-time equivalency or greater. Note: Fees are not covered by tuition remission, including fees bundled in tuition.
Eligibility
- Employees must be employed on the first day of the semester to be eligible that semester
- Employees must remain in good standing with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher for continued eligibility

Applying for Employee Tuition Remission

1Verify eligibility
To apply for tuition remission, the employee must meet all of the following criteria:
- Applied to the university
- Accepted to the university
- Registered for classes

2Submit a tuition remission request
After completing Step 1, the employee must submit a tuition remission request in Workday, according to the schedule below.
Tuition remission requests are required each semester. Eligible employees submit requests online by logging into Workday, selecting "Benefits" from the home page, clicking "Change Benefits," and choosing "Tuition Remission."

Tuition Remission for Dependent Children
After completing one year of eligible service, employees’ dependent children are eligible to receive tuition‑free coverage for their first undergraduate degree (up to 144 credit hours) through the end of the semester in which they turn 26. Fees are not covered by tuition remission, including fees bundled in tuition.
Eligibility
- Eligible service is defined as regular faculty or staff working full-time (80% full-time equivalency or greater) for at least one year
- Employees must be claiming the dependent for tax purposes or certify they provide more than 50% of the dependent's support

Applying for Dependent Tuition Remission

1Verify eligibility
To apply for tuition remission, the employee's dependent must meet all of the following criteria:
- Applied to the university
- Accepted to the university
- Attended their orientation
- Registered for classes

2Submit a tuition remission request
After completing Step 1, the employee must submit a tuition remission request for their dependent in Workday, according to the schedule below.
The employee will need the dependent’s student ID number to complete the request. Tuition remission requests are required each semester the student enrolls. Eligible employees submit requests online by logging into Workday, selecting "Benefits" from the home page, clicking "Change Benefits," and choosing "Tuition Remission."

Employee Tuition Remission FAQs
After registering for classes, you must submit a request in Workday according to the Tuition Remission Submission Schedule.
- Eligibility will be reviewed
- Notification is sent to the Bursar
- Tuition remission is applied to your student account if approved
No, you do not pay your tuition remission upfront as it is applied directly to your Workday account. However, fees are your responsibility so you may need to pay applicable fees upfront.
- Fees are not covered (student, bundled, etc.)
- Coverage is limited to:
- 2 courses / 8 credit hours (80% FTE employees)
- 1 course/ 4 credit hours (>40% FTE or contract faculty >40%FTE employees)
- Additional courses or credits must be paid out-of-pocket

- Equivalent of:
- 2 courses (full-time employees)
- 1 course (part-time/contract faculty)
- Applied as 6 credit hours per semester, up to 18 per year
- Rate is based on total program cost ÷ required degree credit hours
Yes, for graduate tuition only. Amounts over $5,250 annually are considered taxable income under IRS guidelines.
No. However, under KRS 164.2843, Kentucky residents age 65+ may qualify for tuition and fee waivers at public institutions.

Dependent Tuition Remission FAQs
After your dependent has applied, been admitted, and registered for classes, you must:
- Submit a Dependent Tuition Remission request in Workday, according to the Tuition Remission Submission Schedule
- You must submit a request every semester in Workday
- Provide the student’s UofL ID number
Once your dependent is registered submit the request in Workday, following the Tuition Remission Submission Schedule
- HR will review for eligibility and if approved, tuition remission will be applied to the dependent’s account by the Bursar. You will receive notice from Human Resources following the review of eligibility.
No. Dependents may enroll as non-degree/visiting students, including summer or winter terms.
- They must still apply, be admitted, and register for classes before remission can be requested in Workday.
Yes, if the employee:
- Claims the child for tax purposes, or
- Certifies they provide more than 50% of the child’s support
No. Dependent tuition remission is not considered taxable income.
Yes, under the following circumstance:
- Employees hired before July 1, 2011: Dependents remain eligible regardless of years of service.
- Employees hired on or after July 1, 2011: Dependents remain eligible if the employee has at least 5 years of continuous service.
