Planning for retirement is an important milestone. This page is designed to help you understand your eligibility, navigate the retirement process and make informed decisions about your benefits. We encourage you to begin planning early and partner with Human Resources to ensure a smooth and well-supported transition.
Eligibility
The University of Louisville does not have a mandatory retirement age for faculty, staff, or administrators.

You may be eligible for retirement if you meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Has a minimum of seven years of regular service and who is at least 60 years of age or
Has a minimum of seven years of service in eligible Faculty or Staff status, and whose combination of age and years of regular service of not less than 80% full-time equivalent at the University is equal to or greater than 75.
For purposes of the preceding sentence, years of regular service mean calendar years or (in the case of faculty) academic years and employment on a basis of not less than 80% full-time equivalent during any part of a calendar year or (in the case of faculty) an academic year shall be counted as a full year of regular service.
Because eligibility requirements can vary by plan and individual circumstances, employees are strongly encouraged to contact Human Resources or their retirement plan provider to confirm their personal eligibility status. Retirement Process
To ensure a smooth transition into retirement, we recommend beginning the process at least 3–6 months in advance of your anticipated retirement date.
- Contact benefits@louisville.edu at least three months prior to your expected retirement date.
