Pre & Post-65 Health Benefits

Pre-65 Health Benefits

UofL provides a monthly subsidy towards the cost of retiree health insurance for those retirees under age 65 who want to continue coverage under the university's health plan as they retire from the university. The monthly subsidy is reflected in the retiree health plan rates below. The retirees are included in the health plan until they reach the age of 65. Retirees and spouses are also eligible to participate in the Get Healthy Now program, and receive discounted health plan rates. Please visit the health plan webpage for more information about coverage.

Post-65 Health Benefits

Once the retiree reaches the age of 65, the retiree can choose to enroll in any of the AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance plans (insured by United Healthcare Insurance Company and United Healthcare Insurance Company New York for NY residents) available through the AARP Health Care Options Program in their state of residence. UofL pays $108.10 monthly ($216.20 if the employee has a spouse). The retiree is responsible for the balance of the cost billed by the AARP Health Care Options Program.

Medicare Part D- Prescription Drug Program began January 1, 2006. Medicare prescription drug plans are available to people with Medicare. Private insurance companies will work with Medicare to offer these drug plans.

Like other insurance, if you enroll in a prescription drug plan you will pay a monthly premium and pay a share of the cost of your prescriptions. Costs will vary depending on the drug plan you choose. Drug plans may vary in what prescription drugs are covered, how much you have to pay, and which pharmacies you can use. All drug plans will have to provide at least a standard level of coverage, which Medicare will set. However, some plans might offer more coverage and additional drugs for a higher monthly premium. When you join a drug plan, it is important for you to choose one that meets your prescription drug needs.
