UofL Digital Media Academy

A Digital Production Camp for Sixth-Grade Girls

June 5-9, 2017

The UofL Digital Media Academy (DMA) is a one-week day camp for rising sixth-grade girls from Atkinson Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Cochran Elementary schools. The camp will be held at the University of Louisville from June 5-9, 9 am to 4 pm.

In this digital production camp, girls will play with and learn to produce several types of digital projects: movies, podcasts, and image manipulations.

All activities of the camp will take place at the University of Louisville Belknap Campus. The majority of the camp will be in Bingham Humanities Room 204, a new 22-computer Mac lab. We will take on-campus field trips, visiting libraries, science labs, and innovation centers. Lunch will be provided from The Ville Grill. Girls will be escorted by camp counselors to and from drop-off points, the lunchroom, and any field trip locations.

The camp will be free to attend, including lunch. Girls will each receive a camp t-shirt, which they will be expected to wear daily, and a new iPod touch.

Girls will each receive their own new, free, WiFi-enabled iPod Touch, with earbuds, for taking pictures and video over the course of the camp. During the camp, the iPod Touch will remain with camp teachers for safekeeping and charging (and to make sure that each girl has her device every day). At the end of the camp, girls will take home their iPod Touch.

Girls will need to be dropped off and picked up at the University of Louisville each day during the following times:

8:45 – 9:00 am
4:00 – 4:15 pm

Camp begins promptly at 9 am and ends at 4 pm. We have included a ride-sharing form in the letter distributed at the parent meeting.

Girls will need to be dropped off at the University of Louisville between 8:45 am and 9 am each morning. Below are the driving directions to the new location. If you are using a smart phone, you can also use GPS to navigate to Rauch Planetarium.

— Enter at the campus entrance at 1st St. and Cardinal Blvd (across from Manual High School). You will come to a stop sign and see the North Information Center across the street. Turn RIGHT. You will come to a traffic circle with a red statue in the middle of it. That's where you can drop off and pick up your camper.

Note that you cannot park in the traffic circle, but there may be metered parking available on 3rd street if you need to park for any reason. There are also sometimes spots available in the parking lot next to the North Information Center.

If you are late, contact Jessie Newman to find out where we are meeting and then walk your camper to the group.

Girls will need to be picked up at the same spot every afternoon. The pick-up time will be between 4 and 4:15 pm.

Because so much happens every day at DMA, if a camper misses more than two days, she will be asked not to return. (Please note that because she will not have finished DMA, she will not receive an iPod Touch.)

Late Arrivals

If a student arrives after 9:15 (more than 15 minutes after the start of the camp day), she will be considered late. Two late arrivals will be considered one absence.

Late Pickups

A pickup will be considered late if you pick up your camper after 4:15. If your camper is still there after 4:30, we may call Home of the Innocents. Two late pickups will be considered one absence.

For questions about the camp (schedule, logistics, etc.), please contact Dr. Mary P Sheridan at maryp.sheridan@louisville.edu.

If at any point during camp hours you need to get in contact with us, please call Annelise Gray at 502-852-0505. She will put you in touch with the teachers of the camp.
