GSS Newsletter - Week of 11/4/20

Dear CEHD Graduate Students,

Welcome to November! The rainy days we've had have certainly set the autumnal mood for us. We have a few more weeks ahead of us before Thanksgiving Break, Finals, and Winter Break. Make sure you're checking the academic calendar, the final exam schedule, and the KY COVID website for updates as we close out the Fall 2020 term. If you're looking for a part-time or holiday job, check-out the holiday & part-time job fair.

Did you know that November 2 - 6, 2020 is recognized as First Generation Celebration Week?

This week, we want to recognize and honor our first-generation graduate students in honor of First-Gen Celebration week. While first-generation students are often quite academically skilled and contribute in many ways to a campus community, navigating the tangled web of college policies, procedures, jargon, and expectations can be a challenge. This pervasive “hidden curriculum” can damage the confidence of first-generation students, lead to struggles in belonging, and result in departure. This opens an opportunity for institutions to provide additional support for these students so they may be as competitive and successful as their peers. You can read more here about initiatives and ways to support first-generation students.

Below, we spotlight some "1G" graduate students and what "being first" means to them!

See you next week! Tell us some great things you've been up to by sharing some good news or an awesome accomplishment. We could all use a hooray.

Check out our newsletter archive for all the stories, resources, and details we've published over the past weeks.
