Professor Maynard participates in Fordham University tax forum

Brandeis School of Law Professor Goldburn Maynard recently participated in a symposium at Fordham University titled "We Are What We Tax." The papers for the symposium will be published by the Fordham Law Review next year.

The point of the symposium was to challenge Justice Holmes' instrumentalist conception of taxation and look beyond the numbers of taxation to find the powerful effect is has on the lives of citizens, Maynard said.

During the event, eight tax scholars were each paired with a non-tax scholar. Maynard was paired with Tim Kuhner, who is a campaign finance scholar at Georgia State.

Maynard's essay “Perpetuating Inequality by Taxing Wealth,” argues that battles over the estate tax are at least partially based on entrenched narratives and stories instead of just facts.
