Brandeis School of Law 3L receives LBA Diversity Scholarship
At the Louisville Bar Association Trailblazer Award Program on Feb. 25, Brandeis School of Law 3L Nick Wilson was awarded the Diversity Scholarship by the association's Diversity Committee. Maria Fernandez, chair of the Diversity Committee, announced $1,000 award.
Wilson, a third-year student at the Brandeis School of Law, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in political science from the University of Louisville.
Said Fernandez, “Nick grew up in the small rural town of Paris, Kentucky, graduating from Paris High School in a class of only 57 students, fewer than half of whom would go on to pursue higher education. He was the only black student in his graduating class who had earned a college preparatory diploma and the first member of his family to attend college. Not unaware of the challenges he faced, Nick nevertheless chose to view any obstacles not as excuses for failure but instead as motivational tools for success. Nick’s interest in becoming a lawyer was sparked by working as an office assistant at Dinsmore & Shohl."
Wilson is a member of the Black Law Students Association and earned a spot on the Journal of Law & Education. He has taught Street Law to high school sophomores through the partnership with Central High School and received the Judge Denise Clayton Scholarship from the Louisville Black Lawyers Association.
He has also demonstrated a commitment to public service through his work with Wayside Christian Mission, Brooklawn Child & Family Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the West End School.
"As one of the Diversity Committee’s primary goals in awarding this scholarship is to support and encourage law students from groups historically under-represented in the legal profession, it is especially gratifying to be able to present it to someone of Nick’s character work ethic," Fernandez said.
