Brandeis alum launches legal program to help Louisville's homeless
Bart Greenwald, a 1994 Brandeis School of Law graduate and attorney at Frost Brown Todd, has launched a program in Louisville called Project HELP, which recruits volunteer attorneys to work with homeless people with small legal infractions that keep them from being employable.
Beginning November 3, HELP (Homeless Experience Legal Protection) volunteers will conduct free legal clinics at the St. John Center every other Tuesday to assist clients with legal issues relating to government benefits, health care, housing, life care planning, consumer disputes, criminal record expungement, child custody, divorce, petty criminal offenses and other issues.
The first training class was held today at Frost Brown Todd, with nearly 60 attorneys signed up so far.
A soft launch has already been held, with eight attorneys trained to help 18 homeless men at the St. John's Center for Homeless Men.
The Legal Aid Society has been providing much of the financial help for the program and the group is looking for fundraising ideas.
More information about the program is available online.
