A Message from the Provost

I invite you to explore results from the University of Louisville’s 2020 participation in the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) faculty satisfaction survey. Administered by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the COACHE survey is designed solely to determine the job satisfaction of our faculty compared to faculty at peer institutions. Our participation in the survey was made possible through our National Science Foundation ADVANCE Adaptation project called Advancement through Healthy Empowerment, Networking, and Awareness (ATHENA). ATHENA aims to improve equity among faculty, focusing on STEM disciplines where systemic equity barriers tend to be most challenging to break, particularly for women and underrepresented minorities.

One of my overarching priorities as provost is to foster a workplace that values our faculty, students, and staff. Undoubtedly, the pressures of an academic career are significant – especially during periods of constraint like those we have experienced recently. Nonetheless, it is vital that we continuously strive to do more to support our community and periodically assess how we are performing and what further might be done at the department, division, or university-wide level. The views of our faculty are essential as we seek to attract and retain the best and brightest scholars and teachers, increase the satisfaction of all faculty, and make the University of Louisville a great place to work.
