Prerequisites

Prerequisite Coursework

The following prerequisites are required, effective for summer 2024 cohort,  for the lower division portion of the ABSN degree program and must be completed prior to beginning the upper division portion of the degree:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Chemistry
  • Anatomy and Physiology I and II with labs
  • Microbiology with lab
  • Lifespan Developmental Psychology
  • Statistics
Prospective students are welcome to reach out to their assigned advisor for an evaluation of credit, timeline to completion of prerequisites and options of where to complete prerequisites.  A minimum grade of C is required in all science prerequisites. Students with two or more prior NURS prefix course failures (grade C- or below) or prerequisite sciences that are older than 10 years, should contact an advisor.

Students may complete remaining prerequisites courses at UofL or at any regionally accredited institution of their choice. Students must consult with their program advisor for appropriate equivalencies. Course equivalency will be determined by the School of Nursing. 

Criteria for Admission to Lower Division of the ABSN Degree

To be considered for admission to the lower division of the ABSN degree to complete prerequisite course work at the University of Louisville, the following items must be submitted to the Undergraduate Office of Admission:

  • Official transcripts representing all college coursework. Minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of least 2.4 on a 4.0 scale.
  • A bachelor’s degree earned from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Completed Undergraduate Admissions Application, including fee.
    Select Transfer Student for “Application Type” or “Returning Student” if you previously attended UL.  Do not select Post-baccalaureate. Select the appropriate major code based on program: NURABSN-Lower Division for Louisville NURABSNOW-Lower Division for Owensboro.
  • Students who plan to finish prerequisites at UL in a spring semester, need only to apply through CAS. If admitted to the summer ABSN cohort, you will also be admitted to the spring term of lower division at UL to finish remaining prerequisites. A separate UL application is not required at that point.
