Prerequisite Coursework

The following prerequisites are required for the lower division portion of the ABSN degree program:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • Chemistry for Health Professionals or higher-level Chemistry. Introduction to CHEM not accepted. – minimum grade of C required

  • Anatomy and Physiology I with lab – minimum grade of C required

  • Anatomy and Physiology II with lab – minimum grade of C required

  • Microbiology with lab – minimum grade of C required

  • Lifespan Developmental Psychology

  • Statistics

Note: All prerequisites must be completed and recorded prior to beginning the upper division portion of the ABSN degree. This includes any bachelor’s degree that is in-progress. Students may apply for upper division while prerequisites are in-progress.

Prospective students are welcome to reach out to the advisor assigned to their location of interest for an evaluation of prerequisites, suggested timeline of completion and equivalency options if taking prerequisites elsewhere.  Students may complete remaining prerequisites courses at UofL or at any regionally accredited institution of their choice. Course equivalency will be determined by the School of Nursing. 

Note: Students with two or more prior NURS prefix course failures (grade C- or below) should contact their location advisor prior to applying to determine eligibility. Prerequisite sciences that are older than 10 years may not be used for prerequisite completion unless student can provide documentation showing application of science knowledge used in the time since completion of course. Criteria for Admission to Lower Division of the ABSN Degree for Prerequisite Completion

To be considered for admission to the lower division of the ABSN degree to complete prerequisite course work at the University of Louisville, the following items must be submitted to the Undergraduate Office of Admission:

  • Official transcripts representing all college coursework. Minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 2.4 on a 4.0 scale of all colleges attended.
  • A bachelor’s degree earned from a regionally accredited institution. Can be in process of completion but must be completed prior to beginning the upper division portion of the ABSN degree program.
  • Completed Undergraduate Admissions Application, including fee.
    Select Transfer Student for “Application Type” or “Returning Student” if you previously attended UL.  Do not select Post-baccalaureate. Select the appropriate major code based on program: NURABSN-Lower Division for Louisville or NURABSNOW-Lower Division for Owensboro.
