About the Division of General Pediatrics

Every child needs a health care professional to guide them through the milestones and hurdles of childhood. The UofL Division of General Pediatrics is uniquely prepared to help families successfully navigate their journey. Our health care providers are children's advocates, committed to providing excellent care to every child, from birth through adolescence. As UofL faculty, we are teachers whose care helps health professions students learn the art and science of medicine.

Mission of the UofL Division of General Pediatrics is to achieve and maintain optimal physical, mental, and social well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. As faculty members of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, we strive to create knowledge, to impart that knowledge to others, and to enable learners to take advantage of every educational opportunity.

To carry out this mission, the Division of General Pediatrics must use evidence and creativity to determine how we deliver care.

We focus on:

    Heather Felton, MD, FAAP, CPST

    Dr. Heather Felton received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Kentucky and completed her Residency at the University of Louisville. She joined the faculty at UofL in 2013 in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Felton’s interests include Injury Prevention and Safety for Children. Through her time at the university, she has helped with the development of Safe Sleep Kentucky, become a Child Passenger Safety Technician, and received additional certification for children with special needs. She is a member of the Injury Free Coalition with the University of Louisville and Norton Healthcare and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention. She joined the Solutions for Patient Safety network in 2022. Through the Kentucky Safety and Planning Alignment Network she learned of the dangers children faced online. She has conducted research in this area but also used the media as a tool for education across various topics and across many platforms. She serves as an Official Spokesperson for the AAP and is on the Council for Communications
    and Media.

    Dr. Sheridan Langford received her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University, medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed her Pediatric Residency training at the University of Louisville. She joined the faculty at UofL in 2015 in the Department of Pediatrics and became an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2021. She additionally works in medical student education at the Global Education Office at the School of Medicine. Dr. Langford’s interests include Breastfeeding Medicine, Social Justice and Health Equity, Community Pediatrics, and Global Health Education.

    Dr. Abigail Williams received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Kentucky, medical degree from the University of Louisville, and completed her Pediatrics Residency at Indiana University. She joined the UofL faculty in 2022. Dr. Williams speaks both English and Spanish. Her clinical interests include food insecurity, pediatric obesity, and healthy living.

    Matthew Kinney, MD, FAAP

    Dr. Matthew Kinney received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Kentucky in 2004, his medical degree from the University of Louisville in 2008, and completed his Pediatrics Residency at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and what was then called Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL from 2008-2011. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics at the UofL School of Medicine since 2014. Dr. Kinney’s clinical interests include Quality Improvement, Ambulatory safety, vaccine safety, Primary Care Dermatology, and clinic-based teaching of Pediatrics residents and medical students. Dr. Kinney currently serves as the Medical Director at the 4 Academic-affiliated NCMG clinics.

    Mirzada Kurbasic, MD, MSCR

    Dr. Mirzada Kurbasic received her medical degree from the University of Sarajevo, Masters in Clinical Research degree from University of Tuzla, and completed her Pediatric Residency at the University Hospitals Tuzla and Sarajevo, and at the University of Louisville where she completed general academic pediatric fellowship as well. She joined the faculty at UofL in 1997 in the General Pediatrics Division and Division of Pediatric Global Health.  Dr. Kurbasic has over 40 years of experience, and as a global health specialist she has practiced clinical and academic pediatrics in Europe, North America and South America. She currently serves as a member of ICATCH-the International Community Access to Child Health program-at the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the mentor of Global Health SIG at the Academic Pediatric Association.

    Libby Mims, MD

    Dr. Libby Mims received her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Auburn University, medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and completed her Pediatrics Residency at the University of Louisville. She joined Norton Children’s Medical Group in 2016 and transitioned to academic pediatrics with Norton Children’s Medical Group and the University of Louisville in 2020. Dr. Mims is the Director of Climate and Environmental Health for the Department of Pediatrics. She has completed a Climate Health Organizing Fellowship, is a Climate Ambassador for ecoAmerica, and she regularly lectures about how climate change impacts health and advocates for public policy that is good for both the environment and children’s health. Her interests include climate change, environmental exposures, and health disparities.

    Marian Morris, MD

    Dr. Marian Morris received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Pre-Professional Studies from the University of Notre Dame, and she received her medical degree and completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Louisville. She joined the UofL faculty in 2015. Dr. Morris has a clinical focus on addressing social detriments of health, and she is currently the Medical Champion on the board of Doctors and Lawyers for Kids. Her interests include food insecurity and its role in the healthy growth of children. Dr. Morris founded the food bank in NCMG Novak Center and remains involved in its growth. At this time, Dr. Morris serves as a faculty preceptor for the MS1 and MS2 Humanism in Medicine course and is the co-course director for the MS4 transition to residency course

    Dr. Amber Pendleton is Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Louisville. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and medical degree from the University of Kentucky, then completed her Pediatrics Residency at the University of Virginia. She joined the faculty at UofL in 2010 and became the Associate Division Chief of General Pediatrics in 2021. Her primary areas of interest include integrating mental and social health into primary care, preventing and treating traumatic stress to enhance resiliency, and promoting health equity through building community partnerships.

    Dr. Jennifer Porter received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Howard University, medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University, and completed her Pediatrics Residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She joined the UofL faculty in 2016. Dr. Porter’s interests include early childhood education, heath literacy, early childhood development and health equity. Dr. Porter currently serves as the Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusive Excellence Committee, Reach Out and Read Site Director, Medical Director of the Early Learning Campus, and Early Childhood Taskforce Chair for the Kentucky Chapter American Academy of Pediatrics.

    Dr. Jonathan Sayat received his Bachelor of Science from Duke University, medical degree from Ohio State University, and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Louisville. He joined the UofL faculty in 2005. His clinical interests include: pediatric asthma, behavioral health, obesity, and care of children with chronic complex medical issues. He currently serves as the director of the outpatient pediatric rotation for first year psychiatry residents.

    Jennifer Thompson, MD

    Dr. Jennifer Thompson received her Bachelor of Science in Pre-Professional Studies and Spanish from the University of Notre Dame, medical degree from Rush Medical College, and completed her Pediatric Residency at Rush University Medical Center. She joined the University of Louisville faculty in 2013. Her leadership roles include Medical Director of the Kosair Charities Center for Pediatric NeuroRecovery Program and Associate Pediatric Clerkship Director for the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She serves on the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Children with Disabilities (AAP COCWD) Educational Subcommittee and Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP) Assessment and Evaluation Collaborative as Co-Chair. Dr. Thompson’s clinical interests include preventive care (for infants and children) and multi-disciplinary care for children with spinal cord injury, and her research interests include pediatric spinal cord injury, children with special healthcare needs and medical education. Her advocacy efforts focus on children with spinal cord injury and special healthcare needs. Dr. Thompson earned a Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education from the University of Louisville and enjoys teaching medical students and residents in the clinical outpatient setting. She mentors medical students and residents and serves on the University of Louisville School of Medicine Student Education Committee and M3-M4 Subcommittee.

    Dr. Lucy Aldridge received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Maryland and completed her Residency at the University of Louisville. She served as the Pediatric Chief Resident from 2023-2024 and joined the faculty at UofL in 2024 in the Department of Pediatrics. During her herm as Chief Resident, she taught Pediatric Residents and medical students through didactic sessions, lectures, and as an attending. She hopes to continue to teach and mentor residents and medical students as a faculty member. Dr. Aldridge serves as a leader of an HCM group and teaches in the physical exam lab whenever possible. Her areas of interest include underserved populations such as refugees and foster care children. 

     

    Nicole Bichir, MD

    Dr. Nicole Bichir received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Bachelor of Arts in Biology, earned her medical degree, and completed her Pediatric Residency all at the University of Louisville. She joined the UofL faculty in 2018. She has worked at all academic sites. Dr. Bichir is a passionate advocate for many types of underserved, under resourced, and at-risk youth, including LGBTQ, children in foster care, children in residential care, and refugee children. She also has a strong interest in mental health and children with medical complexity, including those with genetic conditions, children with autism, and ADHD. Her research interests include advancing refugee health, and global health. She is involved in leading the Domestic Global Health rotation and international elective in global health in Tamale, Ghana

    Daniel Arnold, MD

    Dr. Daniel Arnold received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Kentucky, and he received his medical degree and completed his Pediatric Residency at the University of Louisville/Kosair Children’s Hospital. He joined the UofL faculty in 2015. Dr. Arnold’s interests include ADHD/mental health and immunizations. He is the director of the pediatric ambulatory rotation, the lab director for the NCMG-Stonestreet office, and has done research in deprescribing of psychotropic medications. Dr. Arnold has also taught residents primary care pediatric topics and outpatient billing.

    Dr. Jeffrey Meyer received his Bachelor of Arts in both Psychology and Biology, as well as his medical degree from the University of Louisville.  He completed his Pediatric Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He joined the UofL faculty in 2012.  Dr. Meyer has a strong interest in medical student and resident education, infectious diseases and vaccination, and dermatology.  He has regular involvement in general pediatrics quality improvement, including initiatives for HPV vaccination, dental health, and asthma, and was the University's Co-PI for the Path2Purpose adolescent mental health study.  He is also trained as an Epic Physician Builder.  He now spends much of his spare time chasing his toddler son.

    Dr. Kristin Schutzman received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Thomas More University, and she received her medical degree and completed her Pediatrics Residency at the University of Louisville. She joined the UofL faculty in 2024. Dr. Schutzman’s interests include preventative medicine, resident curriculum development, and breastfeeding medicine. She is currently working towards becoming a certified lactation counselor.

    Dr. Jennifer Stiff received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Bellarmine University, medical degree from the University of Louisville, and completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She joined the UofL faculty in 2014 and served as the Interim Division Chief of General Pediatrics from 2022-2024. She is now the Associate Division Chief and is also the Co-Course Director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Course. She also serves the Department of Pediatrics as an Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program.  Dr. Stiff’s interests include parenting, injury and illness prevention, and nutrition and healthy lifestyle. She also enjoys teaching medical students and residents about developing and refining communication and physical exam skills.

    Dr. Ryan Williams received his Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology from the University of Oregon, medical degree from Oregon Health and Science University, and completed his Pediatric Residency at the University of Louisville. He joined the UofL faculty in 2020. Dr. Williams’ interests include newborn, infancy, and early childhood, as well as ADHD diagnosis and management, and student/resident medical education.

    Judith Theriot, MD, CPE
    Professor of Pediatrics

     

    Dr. Judith Theriot received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of New Orleans, and received her medical degree and completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Louisville. She joined the UofL faculty in 1998. Dr. Theriot’s research experience has focused primarily on the needs of underserved children. She has also been involved with vaccine studies and other clinical trials, as well as in curriculum development including needs assessments around caring for underserved children and training our medical students and residents to recognize the needs of these patients and help identify resources for them. Dr. Theriot currently serves as the Medical Director of the Kentucky Office for Children with Special Health Care Needs.
