University Writing Center wins A&S Community Service Award
The UofL Writing Center has won the 2018 Community Service Award from the College of Arts & Sciences. The award will be presented during the A&S Celebration of Excellence on Friday, 13 April at 2:00 pm. Among other projects, the Award Committee recognized the Writing Center's partnerships with the Family Scholar House and the Western Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library.
The University Writing Center is currently in its third year of partnering with Family Scholar House to offer writing tutoring on-site for their participants. It is also in its second year of working at the Western branch of the Louisville Free Public Library with primarily K-12 writers. The Writing Center developed these partnerships as part of its ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of writing, both on campus and off.
Through the hard work of its administration, excellent leadership at the community organizations, and a large group of undergraduate interns and graduate student volunteers, the Writing Center has been able to create sustainable, meaningful relationships with its community partners. This academic year alone, interns and volunteers at the Writing Center have already had over 200 consultations with writers in the community. In addition to weekly one-on-one tutoring, these projects involve a variety of workshops and events designed to communicate an understanding of writing as a recursive, social process.
