Program Information

The objective of the Finance major program is to provide our students with a competitive edge in their professional financial and managerial careers. Our majors are prepared, upon graduation to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills, either individually or in teams, in order to creatively and ethically solve problems in a global marketplace.

Degree Summary

To complete the degree in the minimum number of hours listed, some hours from the General Education Requirements must be satisfied by courses defined by the unit and/or program. Using other courses to satisfy General Education requirements will require additional hours to complete the degree requirements. See the Degree Requirements tab for specific coursework.

Departmental Admission Requirements

New Students and Transfer Students

Admission to the College of Business ensures admission to the BSB in Finance.

Current Students - Admission in Good Standing

1. Students who are currently enrolled in the College of Business as a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration or Business Economics major are permitted to change to a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Finance as long as they are in good academic standing; and
2. The student has completed MATH 111 College Algebra - QR (or equivalent) or  MATH 180 Elements of Calculus - QR 

General Education Requirements         

All degrees require the completion of the University-wide General Education Program (link provided above).  Some General Education requirements may be met in the requirements for the major or supporting coursework, in which case additional electives may be required to complete the minimum hours for the degree.

College/School Requirements

Total of 53 includes 3 credit hours of ECON and 3 credit hours of MATH that are also counted in the 31 General Education hours above.

Program/Major Requirements

Transfer students must take a minimum of 12 credit hours in their major within the College of Business.

Six hours of US and global perspectives courses are required and may be incorporated within the degree program.

All course prerequisites must be followed.

College/School Requirements include six hours of the General Education (3 hours Quantitative Reasoning and 3 hours Social & Behavioral Sciences).  A course satisfying the General Education Oral Communication requirement (COMM 111, COMM 112 or HON 214) is a prerequisite for BUS 301, but not included in the degree requirements. Students who select PHIL 222 to satisfy the Ethics requirement will also satisfy 3 hours of the Arts & Humanities requirement, which may require additional electives to complete the degree.

For students with strong high school mathematics backgrounds, and for students who intend to pursue graduate work in finance, MATH 205 and MATH 206 is recommended. MATH 206 may be taken as aGeneral Elective.

If MATH 205/MATH 206 is taken, there will be 4-8 total hours of math, reducing the General Elective hours required to complete the degree.

The following courses will also meet the statistics requirement: MATH 109, PSYC 301, SOC 301, ISE 360, MATH 360, PHST 302, POLS 390 or equivalent.

FIN 305 and ACCT 301 are the same course, as cross-listed courses. Finance BSBA students should normally take FIN 305, but ACCT 301 is acceptable if already taken.  Students will not be given academic credit for both FIN 305 and ACCT 301 separately.

Co-operative Education is an elective curriculum option for up to six (6) hours of credit. Three hours of Co-op credit may count as a finance elective.  If a student takes a second 3-hour Co-op class, then it would count as a General Elective.  Pass/Fail credit is given for approved COB co-op work experiences. Participation in the COB Co-op program is encouraged to strengthen the BSBA degree with professional experience and to enhance a student's resume.

Flight Plan

The Flight Plan outlined above is intended to demonstrate one possible path to completing the degree within four years.  Course selection and placement within the program may vary depending on course offerings and schedule, elective preferences, and other factors (study abroad, internship availability, etc.). Please consult your advisor for additional information about building a flight plan that works for you.

Degree Audit Report
Degree Audit reports illustrate how your completed courses fulfill the requirements of your academic plan, and which requirements are still outstanding. Degree audits also take transfer credits and test credits into account. "What-if" reports allow you to compare the courses you have completed in your current academic plan to the courses required in another academic plan.  Should you have questions about either report, please consult with your academic advisor.
