The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, is a federal law that protects the privacy and security of an individual's protected health information (PHI).

The HIPAA Privacy Rule provides individuals with rights over their health information and sets rules and limits on who can look at and receive their health information. The Privacy Rule applies to all forms of an individual's PHI, whether electronic, written, or oral.

The HIPAA Security Rule requires security for health information in electronic form.

UofL has policies and procedures in place to ensure the privacy, security and proper use and disclosure of PHI, in compliance with HIPAA.
