Dr. Shumaker is an Assistant Professor and Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Track Coordinator. She is a board-certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years’ experience in critical care, cardiology, and internal medicine. She has more than 10 years of teaching experience in clinical, traditional classroom, hybrid, and online platforms in both undergraduate and graduate programs.
She has presented at local, regional, and national conferences. Her professional presentations, abstracts, and publications focus on student engagement, organizational readiness for DNP curriculum, and interdisciplinary collaboration in clinical practice. Her research has focused on patients with heart failure. She has expertise in quantitative research methods and has published on the psychometric properties of a widely used social support instrument.
Dr. Shumaker is a member of the Kentucky American Heart Association (AHA) Advocacy Team where she partners with lobbyists to advocate for state and federal laws that impact cardiovascular health. She received an Alumni Association Award for significant impact in advanced practice, mentoring, and professional nursing organization. Dr. Shumaker maintains a Quality Matters (QM) certification in online course design. She has served Sigma Theta Tau International as Governance Chair, Secretary, and Finance Chair during 2009-2019.
