Emergency Radiology Fellowship
The Department of Radiology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine is pleased to offer an Emergency Radiology fellowship. This GME approved, non-ACGME accredited, fellowship is a one-year program with two fellowship spots per year.
Our program will prepare you for an exciting career in emergency radiology. You will interpret studies from both the University of Louisville Health System and Norton Children's Hospital.

The interpretation of studies and training will primarily occur at the University of Louisville Hospital.
Our fellow radiologists are part of a multidisciplinary team providing diagnosis and treatment plans for ER patients in collaboration with the emergency medicine unit, heart care, trauma center, urgent care, surgery, pathology, and stroke.
The program strives to promote the mission of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and the Department of Radiology by providing inclusive excellence in clinical imaging, education, and research through increased subspecialty experience, high-quality compassionate care, and leadership in emergency radiology.

Curriculum
Under the supervision of emergency radiologist faculty, fellows will receive advanced academic training in emergency radiology and all the associated responsibilities, developing understanding and making findings related to ER radiology including imaging of stroke, trauma, postoperative complications, and all other acute pathologies and presentation.
Over the course of the year, fellows will become highly proficient in interpreting emergency radiology imaging, managing a complex ER radiology reading room and patient responsibilities efficiently. Advanced training will also encompass sub-specialties pertinent to high level instruction in emergency radiology, including neuroradiology, body imaging, and pediatric emergency radiology.
Fellows will participate in multidisciplinary conferences, including the Trauma Surgery Quality Improvement Conference, the Radiology Department Grand Rounds, and the Radiology Department Quality & Safety Conference, with the goal of becoming an effective member of the multidisciplinary patient care team.
Fellows will gain invaluable experience in reading at an attending level and improve confidence in making final interpretations. At the end of training, fellows will be well-equipped to head into practice as an attending physician.
Our curriculum is based on the guidelines recommended by the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER).
Research
We encourage fellow participation in scholarly activities and publish case reports, educational exhibits, and manuscripts. At least one scholarly activity is expected, and fellows are welcome to participate in ongoing research/scholarly activity projects and/or to create their own project. Dedicated research time can be arranged for fellows who have a strong interest in completing an approved research project/scholarly activity.
Our faculty within Emergency Radiology and the department have extensive experience with the design and implementation of research projects. The fellows will have access to faculty mentors that can foster and develop skills needed for research, as well as provide guidance through all steps of the research process.
Responsibilities
As in emergency radiology practice, our fellows will work days, evening, and overnight (much less frequent) shifts, in a balance that provides optimal training and experience for future emergency radiology practice.

Additionally, the Ophthalmology Clinic offers a discount on eye examinations and the Dental School offers a complete dental program.The GME office provides free parking permits to fellows for the HSC 620 parking garage.Fellows have full access to the University’s many fitness facilities free of charge. Family members are also allowed to use facilities for an additional fee. Fellows are eligible to purchase student athletic tickets, which are offered at reduced rates through the Athletics Department. Additional Departmental Support for Radiology Fellows:
- CME Travel Funding (Totaling $1,500): The program will support the Emergency Radiology fellows attending either the annual RSNA or ASER meeting. All university travel policies must be followed.
- One lab coat and personalized jacket are provided to each incoming fellow.
- Fellows who present at an approved national conference may be eligible to have a portion of the travel costs covered by the department. Fellow's presenting will be given additional days off to attend the conference.
- Fellows are entitled to four weeks of vacation during the academic year. The Emergency Radiology fellowship observes the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Holiday time off is not deducted from the fellow's vacation balance.
- Fellows are given five additional days off to use for employment interviews.
Fellowship Application Process
The program participates in the Emergency Radiology Fellowship Match sponsored by the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER) and follows the timeframe established by the NRMP. https://aser.org/emergency-radiology-fellowships/application-process/. We have two appointments available for the 2025-2026 year. Interviews for the position will be held between January-March 2024.
