William Edward Grant (13th Dean)
William Edward Grant, M.D. (1845-1920)
Thirteenth Dean 1911-1914
M.D., Kentucky School of Medicine, 1887
William E. Grant graduated from the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1886 and from the Kentucky School of Medicine in 1887. From 1909-1917 he served as Chief Health officer for the City fo Louisville and from 1911-1914 as Professor of Medical Life Insurance and Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Louisville.
Dr. Grant’s published works focused primarily on the duties and responsibilities of physicians engaged in life insurance physical examinations.
During Grant’s administration the Medical Department began to overcome the negative publicity it received from Abraham Flexner’s report, Medical Education in the United States and Canada in 1910. He urged the School of Medicine to work in closer association with the rest of the University, and to improve the school’s relations with city agencies, particularly the Louisville City Hospital. At the time of his death, Dr. Grant was Registrar for Vital Statistics for the City of Louisville.
