Douglas Martin Haynes, M.D. (1922-2007)

Nineteenth Dean 1969-1973

M.D., Southwestern Medical College, 1946

Douglas M. Haynes was born in New York City, and was educated in Europe as a child.  He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1943 with B.S. and B.A. degrees, and obtained his M.D. at the age of 24.  He interned in Pathology and served his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX.  He returned to Southwestern as a faculty member, and then transferred to the University of Louisville in 1955.  He contributed extensively to the literature of obstetrics and gynecology.  He earned a reputation as a precise lecturer, an excellent teacher with a subtle wit, a talented musician, knowledgeable in ancient languages, and widely read.

Dr. Haynes was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1969 when Dean Donn Smith resigned.  He was appointed interim Dean until 1969 when he was confirmed as the nineteenth Dean.  In the fall of 1970, he supervised the Medical School’s move to the new Health Sciences Center on Preston Street.  The new facilities heralded an increase in class size from 98 to 135.  The Department of Family Practice was organized as launched during his tenure as Dean.  Dean Haynes resigned as Dean in 1973, but continued his appointment at the University, retiring in 1987.  During his retirement he taught at a local theological seminary.
