Jedidiah Cobb, M.D. (1800-1860)

Fourth Dean, 1842-1852

M.D., Bowdoin College The Medical School of Maine, 1823

Dr. Jedidiah Cobb, a native of Gray, Maine, received his A.M. degree from Bowdoin College, Maine, in 1820, and his M.D. from Bowdoin College, the Medical School of Maine, in 1823.  He taught anatomy at Bowdoin and then was a Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati.

Dr. Cobb moved to Louisville in 1837 to become one of the founding faculty members of the Louisville Medical Institute.  He was Professor of Anatomy from 1837 until his retirement in 1852.  He served as Dean of the Faculty, Department of Medicine, University of Louisville from 1842-1852.  Cobb allegedly had an aversion to writing and apparently left no literary contributions in his field; although a student described him as a clear lecturer and admirable dissector.  During his tenure as Dean, the medical school was heavily involved in local political issues centering on the issue of public or private control of the University of Louisville.  Dr. Cobb died in 1860 in Manchester, MA.
