    Principal Investigator

    Dr. Tamara Newton graduated from the University of Michigan with an A.B. in  Psychology, where she first developed her interest in psychophysiology. After working for two years at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, she attended Rutgers University where she earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis on health psychology and stress and emotion science. Her predoctoral clinical internship at the Medical University of South Carolina included a major rotation at the Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center that focused on traumatic stress studies, and her postdoctoral fellowship at the Ohio State University College of Medicine provided advanced training in the psychoneuroimmunology of marital conflict and stress. After two years as Assistant Professor at Miami University, Dr. Newton worked as a Clinical Research Psychologist at the Women’s Health Sciences Division of the National Center for PTSD, housed at the Boston VA, focusing on research and treatment for stress-related disorders in women veterans. Dr. Newton is currently Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, where she directs the Stress & Health Lab and teaches an upper-level undergraduate seminar on the Psychology of Trauma. She is a Fellow in the Society of Behavioral Medicine and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment and Trauma.

    Doctoral Students

    • Alexis Cerrillos, M.S., earned a B.S. in Psychology and a in B.A. Criminal Justice from Benedictine University. She is a fourth-year graduate student in clinical psychology with interests in trauma, flourishing, and positive emotion within the broader context of health psychology.

    • Ashley Phares, B.A., earned a B.A. in Psychology with a Minor in Biology from Randolph-Macon College. She is a third-year graduate student in clinical psychology with interests in trauma, PTSD, and sleep health.

    • Angie Chou, M.A., earned an M.A. in Psychology from CSU-Los Angeles, and a B.S. in Psychobiology from UCLA. She is a second-year graduate student in clinical psychology with interests in advanced statistical techniques for identifying unique patterns of intimate partner stress and trauma, and the psychobiology of stress.
