Course guide
Psychology courses are numbered sequentially corresponding to the breadth and depth of the courses. Students should use course numbers to guide course choices and planning.
200 level courses are introductory courses with no prerequisites that meet Cardinal core requirements
- PSYC 201 (Introduction to Psychology) meets SB requirement
- PSYC 205 (Making Sense of Data) meets QR requirement
PSYC 301 and PSYC 302 are the foundational research methods sequence required of all psychology majors. These courses should be completed as soon as possible as PSYC 302 is required for admission to the major and to the CUE course needed for graduation.
- PSYC 301 (Statistics for Psychology) requires prior completion of a QR course with a C or higher
- PSYC 302 (Research methods) requires completion of PSYC 301 with a C or higher
PSYC 305-308 courses are core courses covering the major areas of psychology. Psychology majors must complete all four core courses. These courses require prior completion of PSYC 201.
- PSYC 305 Brain and Behavior
- PSYC 306 Lifespan Development
- PSYC 307 Cognitive Process
- PSYC 308 Psychopathology
PSYC 310-349 courses are introductory level electives. Psychology majors must take five electives at the 310+ level (introductory or intermediate level electives). These courses require completion of PSYC 201.

- PSYC 310 Psychology of Diversity
- PSYC 312 Social Psychology
- PSYC 315 Personality
- PSYC 325 Health Psychology
- PSYC 331 Sensation and Perception
PSYC 350-399 courses are intermediate level electives. Psychology majors must take five electives at the 310+ level (introductory or intermediate level electives). Enrollment in these courses requires completion of PSYC 301 or a related core course (PSYC 305-308)
Courses vary by semester, but may include:
- PSYC 355 Neuroscience – requires completion of PSYC 305
- PSYC 368 Infant and Child Development – requires completion of PSYC 306
- PSYC 378 Measurement and Testing – requires completion of PSYC 301
- PSYC 388 Principles of Clinical Psychology – requires completion of PSYC 308
PSYC 400-489 courses are upper level seminars. These courses require prior completion of related 300 level courses and/or instructor permission. Courses labeled WR meet the university writing requirement. Courses labeled CUE meet the CUE requirement for graduation and are restricted to Psychology majors. CUE courses require completion of PSYC 302 with a grade of C or higher, 24 hours completed in the major, and 90 hours total (i.e., senior standing).

- PSYC 495 Honors psychology research – for students in the honors thesis program only
- PSYC 496 Honors psychology thesis WR, CUE – for students in the honors thesis program only
PSYC 500-599 courses are cross-listed with graduate (600 level) courses. Enrollment requires prior background and permission of the instructor.
PSYC 600 level courses are graduate courses. These courses are typically restricted to students in the graduate program. Undergraduates must have approval from the instructor, department chair, and graduate dean in order to enroll in a 600 level course.
