Dr. George Shields (1951-2020)
The Philosophy Department is shaken and saddened by the loss of Prof. George Shields. Shields, who graduated from UofL with his BA (1973) and MA (1975) in Philosophy and won the Department's inaugural Richard Campbell Smith award, completed his PhD at the University of Chicago and taught for 30 years at Kentucky State University, where he was named Distinguished University Professor in 2000 and served 15 years as chair of the Division of Literature, Languages, and Philosophy. Prof. Shields was elected president of the Southeast Division of the American Academy of Religion in 2007, and his latest book, The Mind of Charles Hartshorne: A Critical Examination, was the culmination of many years' work alongside coauthor Donald Wayne Viney. The book appeared earlier this year and was soon #1 on the Amazon Analytic Philosophy chart. The Department sends its deepest condolences to Prof. Shields's family and many friends, and we look forward to honoring him once we are able to organize sizeable in-person events.
