School of Nursing chosen as one of 100 to participate in initiative focused on compassionate care

Helping nursing students understand the importance of humanistic, patient-centered care is the focus of a $3,000 grant to the UofL School of Nursing from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The ultimate goal of the grant is to create a link between nurses and physicians to deliver optimal health care in the 21st century.

The grant will support the school’s transition ceremony – a rite of passage for UofL nursing students as they sign a Code of Ethics and take part in this symbolic step into the nursing profession. Diane Riff, assistant professor and the grant recipient, will be the keynote speaker.

Students also will receive a specially designed pin to wear on their scrubs that will serve as a visual reminder of their oath and commitment to providing high quality care. About 140 undergraduate students will take part in the transition ceremony. The event is set for Aug. 29 on the Louisville Campus at the HSC Auditorium in the Kornhauser Library at 6pm. Owensboro extension campus students will take part in a ceremony on Sept. 12.
