Nursing Students Experience HSC’s Cultural Competency Day, November 10, 2015
80 Junior-1 and 53 Senior-2 Community Health nursing students participated in the HSC Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s Cultural Diversity Day. This was an interprofessional workshop attended by students from Medical, Dental and Dental Hygiene, Public Health, Kent School, and Sullivan Pharmacy that addressed cultural competency and provided skills to define and recognize health disparities, work in interprofessional teams to coordinate care and identify solutions to promote health equity, focus on systems approach and identify community resources available. An overview by specialists who work with immigrants and refugees, LGBT, and poverty populations or with overall cultural barriers was presented and personal experiences by individuals. The Senior-2 nursing students presented their culminating community projects via posters that were on display during the entire 8 hour workshop. A very informative and enriching learning experience!
