Physical Plant
The Physical Plant department supports three campuses - Belknap, Health Sciences Center (HSC) and Shelby, along with several buildings off campus.
About Us
Physical Plant is responsible for over 10.5 million square feet comprising over 130 University owned buildings along with 660 acres of land. Physical Plant also operates and maintains a central steam and chilled water plant on our Belknap campus and a 13,800-volt distribution system at our Health Sciences Center and Belknap Campuses.

Physical Plant provides a full range of services supporting all three campuses, including both chargeable services and routine maintenance provided free of charge.
Cabinetry
We construct, maintain, alter and repair wooden furniture, cabinets, counters, cornice work other fixtures and hardware.
Carpentry
We perform general carpentry work in the alteration, repair, maintenance and renovation of buildings and grounds.
Controls
We provide installation, maintenance, and upgrades for the temperature controls in all buildings.
Custodial
We provide efficient and quality cleaning services to over 3,000,000 square feet of non-residential building space.
Electrical
We’re responsible for electrical power distribution, lighting, elevator and escalator maintenance, fire alarm systems, card access systems and more.
Flooring
We perform measuring, layout, seaming, and installation of carpet and floor tile.
General
We’re responsible for moving furniture and equipment, special event setups, refuse collection, recycling and disposal and surplus removal.
Grounds
The Grounds Shop is responsible for mowing, trimming, parking lot maintenance, landscaping, snow removal, pest control, solid waste and recycling.
HVAC
We provide installation, maintenance and services for air conditioners, refrigerators, furnaces, small boilers, humidification systems and more.
Lockshop
The Locksmiths perform skilled work in the installation and repair of locks and key systems.
Maintenance
We provide coverage of the general maintenance of all buildings on all campuses.
Painting
We’re responsible for all interior and exterior painting, caulking and finishing of surfaces and equipment.
Plumbing
We’re responsible for installation and maintenance of all plumbing systems, including water, natural gas and sanitary and storm drain systems.
Roofing
We perform repairs and installation of various types of roofing systems, including guttering and downspouts, waterproofing and caulking work.
Steam Plant
We’re responsible for the production of high-pressure steam and chilled water which is distributed to most of our buildings.
