As UofL's largest academic unit, the College of Arts & Sciences offers a diverse range of opportunities from dozens of departments and programs in the natural and physical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, and the arts and humanities. A degree from Arts & Sciences provides a solid foundation upon which to build future academic, professional and personal successes.
Our students learn how to think critically; but they don’t just think, they do. They explore, create, research, communicate, collaborate, and meaningfully engage in the world around them. As a result, graduates of UofL’s College of Arts & Sciences are adaptable, innovative, and highly attuned problem-solvers. They are lifelong learners who are well-equipped for the work force and primed to make significant contributions to their chosen professions and respective communities.
Fulbright fulfillment: Persistence pays off for A&S Alumna
Jessica Williams,a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences with degrees in Spanish, political science and Latin American and Latino studies, tried three times to earn a prestigious Fulbright scholarship. In early September, her diligence was rewarded: she learned she was selected for the prize and will spend most of 2018 in Brazil as an English teaching assistant at a public university.
Biology Prof. Steve Yanoviak studies lightning strikes on trees in Panama
On Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal, UofL biology professor Steve Yanoviak and his colleagues map lightning strikes and find that they kill mainly the loftiest trees, likely disturbing the forest ecology.

UofL Theatre Arts student works with Locust Grove to bring story of enslaved distiller to life
Sidney Edwards, a teaching assistant earning her MFA in performance, was tapped to reenact the role of an enslaved distiller for visitors at the newly erected distillery site at Locust Grove, in Louisville, KY. Her job is also to help craft the character and storyline for the role she’ll be playing.
