Your support is critical to our success. Gifts to the Department of Philosophy help us continue our exceptional research and will support the development of outstanding graduates and professionals.
Philosophy is methodical inquiry into the nature, purpose, meaning, and value of human life, action, and institutions. The UofL Philosophy Department has particular strength in applied philosophical inquiry, where the tools of Philosophy inform and are informed by the arts and humanities, the natural and social sciences, and community-engaged research.
The 21st Annual Steven Humphrey Undergraduate Philosophy Colloquium took place on October 27, 2023.
Students from around North America shared their philosophical ideas & arguments. Dr. Sara Protasi (University of Puget Sound) delivered a keynote address, emissaries from the University of Kentucky discussed graduate school in Philosophy, and the editors of Stance undergraduate philosophy journal offered a workshop on publishing one's research. The 2023 issue of Stance includes two papers that were initially presented at the Humphrey Colloquium, and papers from this year's colloquium will be eligible for the 2024 issue.
The Philosophy Department is grateful to Steven Humphrey for his ongoing, very generous financial support of the Colloquium.

Then, on World Philosophy Day (November 16), the 1st annual UofL Philosophy Slam brought budding philosophers to campus from Atherton and duPont Manual high schools. The students shared their ideas, insights, and good humor for a fantastic event that will return next year. The Philosophy Department is grateful to the College of Arts & Sciences and the Office of Community Engagement for their support of this event.
