Madison Swingholm
2019 Boren Scholar
UofL senior Madison Swingholm has been awarded a 2019 Etscorn International Research Award. UofL awards the Irvin F. and Alice S. Etscorn International Summer Research Award to promising undergraduates interested in conducting international research over the summer.
Swingholm will use the scholarship to study international politics in Oslo, Norway.
“This award is great because it encourages students to create their own plan and pursue their unique ideas and goals. This experience in Oslo is ties together my undergraduate work thus far and lays out a path for my future. It wouldn’t have been possible if not for this award.”

Inspired By
Dr. Jason Gainous played a large role in helping me brainstorm ideas for this project and continues to be one of the most involved and encouraging professors I’ve worked with. Working with him this past spring on a research project introduced me to the processes of collecting and analyzing data. This experience helped me to realize that I want to do research of my own.
Dr. Melinda Leonard led an ISL&RP program focusing on peacebuilding and conflict resolution, which I took part in this past spring. If it weren’t for this opportunity, I don’t believe I would have been introduced to the field of peace studies, which has completely changed my path and goals for the future.
