Program Information

The Doctor of Audiology degree is a four-year, post-baccalaureate degree program leading to a professional degree conferred by the Graduate School. The program is physically located within the Louisville Health Sciences Campus and administratively located in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders in the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The faculty are committed to the clinical focus of the Doctor of Audiology degree and endeavor to bring real-world experiences to bear on the teaching environment. The faculty actively participate in the provision of clinical services in both hospital and private practice arenas.

Students benefit by working side by side with the Audiology faculty and staff in an active and dynamic medical environment. Students will interact with faculty, residents and students from other disciplines such as Otolaryngology, speech pathology, and pediatrics, not only in the provision of clinical services but also in teaching and research endeavors.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program will be for Fall term only.  Deadline for application materials is January 1st of the application year.

Students must apply through CSDCAS.

Applicants should:

1. Complete an application for the University of Louisville via CSDCAS.
2. Pay an application processing fee to UofL Graduate School (student will be notified of payment via email once their application is received from CSDCAS). 
3. Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (verified in CSDCAS).
4. Three letters of recommendation (uploaded in CSDCAS).
5. A structured personal statement in CSDCAS: Please respond to all three questions in up to two pages (total):
   • Part 1: Describe and explain the experience(s) you have had that have convinced you that audiology is the career for you. (This may include: coursework, shadowing, job experience, personal experience.)
   • Part 2: What relevant life experiences (e.g., leadership roles, service to the community, personal accomplishments, etc.) and personal qualities do you have that will help you to succeed in graduate school.
   • Part 3: Describe how you have solved a problem and how the skills and techniques that you employed might help you in graduate school and as a clinical audiologist. (The problem could be one related to your undergraduate experience, to a job that you have held, or a personal challenge that you have faced.)

Applications must be completed and received by January 1st of each year.

The criteria listed above are program minimums. Students meeting these criteria are not guaranteed admission. The program in Audiology adheres to the Essential Functions Policy for all students. Interviews are usually held in January or February, and campus tours and information sessions are held in the Spring and Fall. Admissions decisions will be made after all applicants have been interviewed (usually mid-late February). Applications should be completed online.

The University of Louisville requires that applicants whose first language is not English, and who earned their degree(s) from an institution in another country, provide evidence of English proficiency as a part of the application process. All applicants for whom English is a second language must also submit official TOEFL scores of 79 or higher on the internet-based test, 213 or higher on the computer-based test. English proficiency can also be met by submitting official IELTS scores of at least 6.5 overall band score from the academic module exam or official Duolingo overall score of 105. During their interview, applicants will be asked to demonstrate a knowledge of the field.

Suggested Coursework

Students who apply to our program and do not have an undergraduate degree in Communicative Disorders (or Speech and Hearing Sciences) are encouraged to apply. Undergraduate coursework in the following areas is useful for success in our program:

• Life Sciences - may include: Human Anatomy and Physiology, Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology, Genetics
• Physical Sciences - may include: Physics, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry
• Behavioral Sciences - may include: Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology
• Mathematics - may include courses beyond College Algebra, Statistics

Program Requirements

The Doctor of Audiology degree program has been designed to meet the content and experience guidelines developed over the past decade by numerous professional organizations and associations.

The curriculum begins with the student spending a significant amount of time in the classroom with a minimum amount of time in the clinical environment. Over the course of the four years, the ratio of classroom to clinic time reverses. During the fourth year, students will be given options for practical experiences through an externship, in a variety of sites around the country.

The Doctor of Audiology program prepares students to meet the requirements for certification and/or licensure.  If you plan to pursue professional licensure or certification you should first determine your state’s criteria for examination and licensure to see how/if our program meets those requirements prior to enrollment. We recommend that you also contact your state’s licensing board directly to verify that the requirements have not changed recently and to answer any questions especially those regarding additional requirements beyond the degree.
