Social narratives is an evidence-based practice where social situations are described in detail to the individual. They can be used to describe new situations or help individuals with situations that have proven to be difficult for them. The goal is that social narratives help learners adjust to these new situations or changes in their routine. In this presentation we will look at how to construct a social narrative and when and how to use them in everyday settings. |

To Be a Sib: An Exploration from the Perspectives of Siblings of Children with Special Needs |

Siblings are our first peers and often the family that will be a part of our lives the longest. These relationships teach us about working through conflict, supporting one another, and learning to be friends. But what happens when one of the siblings has a physical, developmental, social, or psychological impairment, a terminal illness, or life-threatening disease? This presentation will be a means to walk participants through common concerns involving sibling relationships when there is a sibling with special needs in the family. We will discuss parental perspectives of parenting children when one child has a disability and the other does not however, the bulk of our time will be spent attempting to understand the non-impaired sibling’s view. |

Structured Work Systems are an evidence based practice developed by the University of North Carolina’s TEACCH Division. Structured Work systems are an instructional strategy that builds on visual supports. Structured works systems have been proven to be effective with a wide variety of learners from preschool through adulthood. This presentation will look at what is a work system and how do I create a work system appropriate to specific learner needs. Participants will leave with an understanding of the components of works systems, be exposed to different types of work systems and an understanding of how to create work systems in the home and school environment. |

This webinar presentation will discuss the general eligibility and participation guidelines for consumers of services from the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR). A brief overview of how OVR partners with other entities to ensure that consumers receive comprehensive services to address all of their unique needs will also be given. Participants attending this webinar will receive a summary of services available to OVR consumers and contact information for offices statewide and learn about OVR’s recent focus on serving individuals with Autism and what we’ve learned. |

11/20/2014 | Using Cognitive Behavior Therapy Techniques with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders |
Michelle Antle, Ed.S. | Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has now been identified by the National Professional Development Center for Autism as being an evidence-based strategy for students on the autism spectrum. Cognitive Behavior Therapy has traditionally been used with other populations such as those with anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc.; however, research was not conclusive on how to make this type of therapy work for individuals with autism. This presentation will focus on why cognitive-behavior therapy techniques have now been added and will give some examples of strategies that may be used to increase positive outcomes for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Webinar participants will understand the definition of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), understand the strengths and limitations of using these strategies and be given several examples of CBT strategies designed for individuals with autism. |

With the increases academic demands of alternate portfolio it is important for teachers to consider how to structure academic goals using the structured work system frame work. Many students with autism successfully learn basic skills in the routine of a structured work system but a frequent pitfall for teachers is that they do not increase the academic demands using this familiar frame work. This webinar will offer suggestions for ways to increase academic demands while staying in the familiar frame work of the structured work system. Participants will review what a structured work system is and leave with ideas for increasing academic demands across multiple subject areas using the structured work system frame work. |
