The College of Education & Human Development (CEHD) in conjunction with the University of Louisville provides qualified students an array of financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, graduate assistantships, fellowships, and tuition remission opportunities. CEHD Human Development Scholarship Application
The CEHD Human Development Scholarship is designed for the advancement of students who are pursuing either an undergraduate or a graduate degree in one of the following programs:

Ayako Phillips Memorial Scholarship – Deadline – July 15.
The Ayako Phillips Memorial Scholarship is designed for the advancement of undergraduate students pursuing a degree in an educator preparation program who will teach for Jefferson County Public Schools. Ayako Phillips was a graduate of the University of Louisville receiving both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education. After graduation she taught elementary education in the Jefferson County Public Schools. Ayako believed in the power of education to improve life. In her generosity she has provided an opportunity for students to continue their education and become educators. Ayako was born in Tokyo and adopted Kentucky as her home. She had great compassion for immigrants and taught in a school with a high immigrant population.
The Ayako Phillips Memorial Scholarship offers one student between a minimum of $1000 per semester and a maximum of $5000 per semester for both fall and spring course tuition. The amount of the scholarship will be based on any additional scholarships and funding awarded to the student. Scholarships will be awarded up to $10,000 per year. If the first recipient does not qualify for the full $5000 per semester, a second student will be eligible to receive the remainder as a scholarship. If a student receives the Ayako Phillips Memorial Scholarship in their junior year, the student must reapply to be considered for a second year of eligibility.

- Undergraduate student(s) admitted to the professional phase of the degree in Elementary Education
- Primary preference is to be given to a student who graduated from Jefferson Country Public Schools. IF no Jefferson County student meets the criteria, then students from districts within the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative are eligible: Bullitt County Schools, Carroll County Schools, Eminence Independent Schools, Franklin County Schools, Frankfort Independent Schools, Gallatin County Schools, Grant County Schools, Henry County Schools, Oldham County Schools, Owen County Schools, Shelby County Schools, Spencer County Schools, Trimble County Schools

Class Act Federal Credit Union Scholarship for Louisville Teacher Residency –Summer Deadline – June 1
The Class Act Federal Credent Union Scholarship is designed for the advancement of students enrolled in the Louisville Teacher Residency Program (LTR). The LTR is a program designed to produce a diverse cadre of quality teachers. Residents are enrolled in a one-year Master of the Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program at the University of Louisville, as well as, employed with JCPS as a resident. Participants receive personalized instruction throughout the process to help them succeed in JCPS classrooms. In return, LTR graduates commit to teach in accelerated improvement schools (AIS) for five years.
The Class Act Federal Credit Union Scholarship offers an award of $1000 per semester for one year of the LTR program (Summer, Fall, Spring = $3000). Selected recipients receive the scholarship for all three terms pending successful progression in the program and meeting eligibility requirements listed below.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Apply and be admitted to the Louisville Teacher Residency Program in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville
- Have a minimum Undergraduate GPA of 2.75
- Demonstrate commitment to work in a low performing, urban school
- Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Open an active account with Class Act Federal Credit Union
- Sign up and attend a minimum of two Class Act Federal Credit Union workshops within a calendar year during their first year in the LTR program
- Sign a photo and video release with Class Act Federal Credit Union, be open to being involved in advertisements, advertorials, interviews, etc. as opportunities arise.

Doris Trautwein Scholarship – Deadline July 15
The Doris Trautwein Scholarship is designed for the advancement of graduate students seeking a degree in the Department of Counseling & Human Development.
The Doris Trautwein Scholarship offers one selected student an annual scholarship for tuition. The scholarship amount awarded will be based on the annual funding of the scholarship fund. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit and financial need. Once selected, a student may continue to receive the scholarship until graduation if the student is making satisfactory progress towards a degree in the Department of Counseling and Human Development.

Early Childhood Development Scholarship
Are you interested in obtaining your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education?There are scholarships for tuition stipends to pursue degrees in IECE through the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority. To be eligible you must be:
- a KY resident
- a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident
- enrolled in the IECE program at UofL
- maintain satisfactory academic progress
- be employed at least 20 hours a week in a state-funded preschool, Head Start, Early Head Start, or child care and not currently receiving funds for coursework.

Junita Losey Scholarship – Deadline July 15
The Juanita Losey Scholarship is designed for the advancement of a junior or senior teacher preparation student who graduated from a Kentucky public high school.
The Junita Losey Scholarship is funded by the Board of Trustees of the Kentucky Teachers' Retirement System to a junior or senior teacher education student who graduated from a Kentucky public high school.
The Junita Losey Scholarship offers one student a $1000 scholarship for fall term and $1000 for the following spring term. Recipients may apply scholarship funds toward tuition, books, or fees. There is no prohibition against the same student receiving the award more than one time.

- Graduate of a Kentucky public high school
- Junior or a senior student majoring in Teacher Education.

- Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.8

Spencer Gavin Aiello Scholarship – Deadline July 15
The Spencer Gavin Aiello Scholarship is designed for the advancement of an out-of-state undergraduate freshman student enrolled in the Sport Administration program in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences.
The Spencer Gavin Aiello Scholarship provides tuition support for an admitted freshmen student to the Sports Administration program. Preference will be given to applicants classified as an out-of-state student for tuition purposes. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The student must also meet the academic scholarship requirements at the College of Education and Human Development.
The Spencer Gavin Aiello Scholarship offers one selected student a minimum $1000 scholarship for tuition annually. The selected recipient may continue to receive the scholarship for up to five years if the student is making satisfactory progress towards a degree and maintains a 2.75 GPA or higher. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit and financial need.

- Freshmen student admitted to a program in Sport Administration in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences

Scholarships and Requirements Policy
Eligible Recipients Must Be:
- Admitted to or enrolled full-time or part-time as a student in the College of Education and Human Development pursuing a degree, a certificate, endorsement, or a rank program.
Eligible Recipients Must Have:
- Minimum Grade Point Average of 2.75 or above
Eligible Recipients Must Submit:
- Students must complete online FAFSA form at www.fafsa.gov. Verification of Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be obtained from the University of Louisville Financial Aid office.
Please Note: Applications will not be accepted after the published deadlines. If the application deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it may be submitted the Monday after the deadline by 5:00 pm EDT.
Note: The College of Education and Human Development are tuition specific and if your tuition is paid in full by another source, you are ineligible to receive the award.
All scholarships offered through the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) are for CEHD students, and the scholarships may be applied to tuition only. The CEHD scholarships are distributed based on the requirements and restrictions of the donor agreements. Therefore, there may be variation in the amount of the awards that you may see on your financial aid accounts as funds from multiple donors may be combined for the scholarship amount received.

Due to the policies of the Office of Financial Aid office, the CEHD scholarship granted to a student may be reduced or withdrawn if the tuition is covered by other sources (grants, tuition remission, or other scholarships).
Step 1: Student: Register for courses in the term of the awarded scholarship. * Please note: If you do not register by the start date of the term, the scholarship will be returned to the CEHD.
Step 2: Honors & Scholarship Committee: Verification of CEHD major, sources of other financial aid, and term enrollment is verified. Applicants and donor agreements are matched to ensure eligibility.
Step 3: Honors & Scholarship Committee: Scholarship spreadsheets are sent to Financial Aid by the CEHD.
Step 4: Financial Aid: Posts the designed scholarship amount to the student account.
Every attempt is made to post the scholarship awards prior to the Bursar's deadline for the payment of tuition each semester. If this does not occur, however, the scholarship recipient is responsible for making payment in full. Once the award is posted with the Bursar, the recipient will be reimbursed in accordance with the amount of the scholarship.
Financial Aid
Who is Eligible: CEHD Graduate and Undergraduate Students
The College of Education & Human Development (CEHD) has a long history of offering scholarship opportunities to undergraduate, master and doctoral students pursuing an education degree program. The CEHD provides approximately $700,000 in scholarships annually. Scholarship selection is competitive, and the scholarship applies to tuition only. Applicants should expect to hear notification four to five weeks after the posted deadline.

Who is Eligible: MAT and Undergraduate Student Teachers
- $1,000 award for each school district in Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC) each semester
- Student teaching scholarship
- Student awarded the OVEC Student Teaching Scholarship will be guaranteed a student teaching assignment in the OVEC district

Who is Eligible: Graduate Students
The Sam and Kathleen Stringfield Graduate Student Travel Award [PDF] is intended to support the research and professional development of graduate students in the CEHD. Awards of up to $500 are available to support costs associated with presenting a paper at a national conference. Application to the travel award should be made after the paper has been accepted by the conference organizer.
Who is Eligible: Ethnic Minority Graduate Students
The Counselors for the New Millennium (CNM) program offers scholarships to defray expenses for tuition and textbooks for ethnic minority graduate students. It also provides collegial support in a dynamic and intensive program for school counseling students. The program employs a cohort model to build strong support groups that often last well beyond graduation.
The Counselors for the New Millennium is a grant-funded program for ethnic minority teachers in Kentucky who are aspiring school counselors. Applicants to the CNM program must first be admitted to the Master of Education in Counseling and Personnel Services with a concentration in School Counseling. Upon admission to the school counseling program, applicants’ names are submitted to the Counselors for the New Millennium Advisory Committee for consideration. Interviews and recommendations complete the application process to the CNM scholarship program.

Who is Eligible: Graduate Students
Graduate assistants are employed by the university and typically work 20 hours a week. The graduate assistant must be enrolled full-time in the term in which they receive the assistantship. Graduate assistantships vary in the terms of the agreement. Most pay a stipend, provide full or partial tuition, and provide health care benefits.
Graduate students in CEHD are also encouraged to check with other areas of the University. Below are links to opportunities outside of CEHD.

KRS 164.2845 - In recognition of valuable service to the preparation of teachers and the need for all teachers to have continual professional growth, a supervising teacher or a resource teacher for teacher interns may, with prior approval of the course-offering institution, take a maximum of six (6) credit hours per term at any public postsecondary institution and pay no tuition. The postsecondary institution shall waive the tuition up to a maximum of six (6) credit hours.
To apply, you must complete the Tuition Waiver Certification for Supervising and Resource Teachers Application [PDF]. It should be completed by the supervising teacher, certified by their principal, and returned to our office.
Please be aware that all applications must be received prior to the end of the registration period for the term you are requesting the credits be applied. Charges will NOT be paid for any forms received after the end of the registration period.
Additionally, forms received with signature dates earlier than the stated completion date will not be accepted.
Eligibility: Credit hours earned are calculated as follows:
- Full supervisor: 7-8 weeks = 3 credit hours 14-15 weeks = 6 credit hours
- KTIP Resource Teacher: 15 weeks = 6 credit hours
Students may exercise the tuition waiver option up to twelve months following the assignment. Tuition benefits are paid directly to the University of Louisville. Tuition benefits can not be paid to any other institutions, regardless of consortium, study abroad, and/or other programs for which tuition is not billed to the university.
Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program.
Conditions
In exchange for receiving a TEACH grant, students must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a school that serves low-income students. Recipients must teach for at least four years within an eight year period after completing the program of study for which a TEACH grant was received. Failure to complete the obligation results in mandatory repayment of the loan, with interest charged from the date of grant disbursement.

- Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in a participating institution, in a program leading to a teacher certification
- Score above the 75th percentile on a designated college admission test or maintain a 3.25 GPA for every semester receiving the grant
- Sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve

High need fields are designated on federal and/or state lists [DOC]. Currently, (2011-2012), the Kentucky list includes certification in Science, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, English as a Second Language, Special Education (LBD, MSD), World Languages, and Reading Specialist.

Amount
Awards are granted for a maximum of $4,000 per year for full-time students (pro-rated for less-than-full-time), up to a cumulative amount of $16,000 for undergraduate students or $8,000 for graduate students. Awards are split into two disbursements, with each disbursement equaling no more than half of the annual award amount.
