Biography
Sujata Saraswat, PhD, is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Neurological Surgery. She also works with the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center and the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology.
Research Interests
The Saraswat lab studies various mechanisms of the proteostasis network that are involved in acute pathogenesis and functional recovery following spinal cord injury (SCI). Current research is focused on understanding how SCI modulates the integrated stress response pathways in glial cells (oligodendrocytes, macrophages, microglia) and causes cell loss and/or neuroinflammation. Techniques used in the lab include primary neural cell cultures, mouse genetics, in vivo models of SCI, pharmacological studies, signaling pathways, gene expression/regulation assays, immunohistochemistry and behavioral analyses. The goal of these studies is to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and identify molecules that can be targeted for therapeutic intervention after SCI.
