Biography

Dr. Morgan joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders in 2018.  He graduated from The University of Utah where he earned both his Ph.D. in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology, and his Au.D.  Dr. Morgan teaches coursework in Diagnostic Techniques, Pathologies, and Acoustics.  His research focuses on how hearing impacts social judgments we make of others (e.g., assessing someone’s emotional state, confidence, gender, etc. based on what we hear). Additionally, he is interested in clinical audiology innovation (clinical audiology simulation, automated audiometry, new treatments for otitis media, etc.). His clinical interests include vestibular testing, intraoperative nerve monitoring, and cochlear implantation.

Importantly, he loves to play ping-pong, read books, listen to jazz music, and spend time exploring Kentucky's many outdoor spaces.

Research Interests

1. Social and emotional auditory perception. My primary research interests surround how listeners make judgments about a talker based on the talker's voice. Specifically, how we make judgments of an individuals emotional state, confidence, and other social indices. I want to know what it is about how people talk that makes a listener categorize someone as happy, sad, smart, emotional, trustworthy, and so on.
    
2. Hearing testing simulation. I have developed a hearing testing simulator now in use by over half of the Audiology programs in the USA and internationally to train hearing health providers around the world. 
   
   3. Otitis Media. I have worked on groundbreaking research using high-energy visible light to target and kill common pathogens found in ear infections. Working with a team of engineers, biologists, ENTs and others, we hope to bring this technology from the lab to the clinic.
