Biography
Melissa Eggen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy. She is a health services researcher who uses quantitative and qualitative methods to study structural and systemic factors that impact access to quality healthcare and services for women, infants, and children from marginalized populations. She has over 15 years of experience working in community-based and state-wide non-profit organizations and has a special interest in conducting research at the local level to inform policy and practice. As a first-generation college student and native Kentuckian, she is interested in growing the maternal health workforce state-wide, especially among those who are from traditionally underrepresented communities.
Research Interests
Dr. Eggen is a health services researcher with expertise in reproductive and perinatal health and social and structural determinants of health. Her work aims to improve equity in access and outcomes in perinatal and reproductive care, particularly among underserved populations. In her research, she uses large administrative datasets, survey data, and qualitative approaches to build a more robust understanding of access and outcomes.
