Biography
Dr. Lee W. Bewley is an Associate Professor and Director, Health Management Programs. He joined the University of Louisville faculty in 2016 to serve as the first Program Director for a new competency-based education (CBE) Healthcare Leadership undergraduate degree program. The CBE Healthcare Leadership program was the first of its kind in the state of Kentucky graduating ten students in the first three years of operation. Dr. Bewley was appointed MSHA Program Director in 2018 leading the program through CAHME reaccreditation and the program's inaugural ranking (#32) in US News. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Administration, Health Services (Strategy) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, MHA from Baylor University, and BA in Economics and Business from the Virginia Military Institute. Dr. Bewley is a board-certified healthcare executive with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He serves as a Fellow for the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Programs (CAHME). Prior to joining the University of Louisville faculty, Dr. Bewley served twenty-three years in the Army Medical Department including a combat tour in Iraq leading a combat support hospital and culminating as Associate Dean of the Academy of Health Sciences Graduate School and Program Director of the Army-Baylor University MHA-MBA Program, a U.S. News Top 10 graduate healthcare management program. Dr. Bewley's research interests include leadership development and healthcare market strategy. Dr. Bewley has served on national and regional advisory boards including ACHE Regional Advisory Council and the Health Administration Press. Dr. Bewley serves as a Faculty Senator; elected twice from 2021 - 2024 and 2025 - 2028. Dr. Bewley currently serves as Regent, ACHE representing the Kentucky Chapter, ACHE governing board, and he served as Kentucky Chapter President during the period 2020 - 2022.
Research Interests
The prime root of my research interests are focused development of competent leaders of healthcare organizations that may more effectively, efficiently manage resources and serve people, communities, and society toward higher levels of population health. Associated areas of research interest include healthcare strategy, healthcare markets, and patient-citizen health decision-making. Finally, continuing research, analysis, and evaluation of healthcare management education outcomes, curriculum development, and student-alumni competency attainment provide secondary, tertiary research interests.
