Biography

Kelly Lyons, DO is a pediatric critical care medicine physician within the "Just for Kids" Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY.  She also serves as the Assistant Medical Director for the Pediatric Support Team at Norton Children's Hospital and practices pediatric palliative care medicine.  In addition to her clinical roles, Dr. Lyons is actively involved in medical education for medical students, residents, and fellows at Norton Children's Hospital.  She is the Director of Focus On Relational Crisis Education (FORCE) Communication Simulation Program for the Pediatric Residency through SPARC at Norton Children's Hospital, Co-Director of the Procedure Rotation for Pediatric Residency, and leads the End of Life Curriculum for Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Program.

Dr. Lyons is a native of Buffalo, NY and completed her undergraduate degree at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA (2010). She attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA and completed an Internal Medicine-Pediatric residency at the University of Buffalo where she served as Chief Resident in her fourth year. She completed a Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Louisville and joined the faculty within the Pediatric Critical Care Department at Norton Children's, University of Louisville.

Research Interests

Dr. Lyons has many research interests from developing curricula focused on palliative care education, to exploring caregiver perceptions on communication within the pediatric intensive care unit, to investigating the impact of food insecurity on the pediatric critically ill population.  She leads a multi-center team focused on creating palliative care subcompetencies for critical care fellows and improving access to palliative care education during critical care training.  She has presented her research across national platforms including the American Academy of Pediatrics to Society of Critical Care Medicine.  She is an expert in qualitative research and analysis and participates in ongoing multi-center qualitative and mix-methods studies.  She is completed additional training in qualitative research at the University of North Carolina. 

 

In addition to her research, she is an abstract reviewer for multiple societies and journal reviewer for Simulation in Healthcare.
