Biography

Joshua Kurtz, MD is a pediatric and adult interventional cardiologist with the Norton Children's Heart institute and the University of Louisville. He started the pediatric cardiology fellowship at UofL and has served as fellowship director since its inception in 2023. Prior to starting the fellowship he was the director of medical student and resident education for the division of pediatric cardiology. In addition to his work with residents and fellows he has taught clinical cardiology at the undergraduate medical education level since 2023. Starting in the fall of 2025 he became the course director for the American Academy of Pediatrics specialty review in Pediatric Cardiology. He has published over a dozen peer-reviewed publications about congenital heart disease. While a fellow at MUSC he was sponsored by an NIH T32 training grant and received the American Academy of Pediatrics Research Fellowship Award for his project “Detecting the Pathophysiology that Drives Fontan Associated Liver disease”. His clinical and research interests include single ventricle physiology, specifically Fontan-associated liver disease, and risk factors for poor outcomes in this population as well as new techniques for interventional therapies in congenital heart disease. 

Dr. Kurtz obtained his undergraduate degree from Tufts University and his medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2013. He then went on to do pediatrics residency at Miami Children’s Hospital followed by fellowships in pediatric cardiology at the Medical University of South Carolina and Pediatric and Adult Congenital interventional cardiology at the University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Hospital. He joined the faculty at University of Louisville and Norton Children’s hospital as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 2020.
