Biography
Dr. States earned his B.S. in Biochemistry from SUNY at Buffalo and his Ph.D. in Pathology and Molecular Biology from Albany Medical College of Union University. He did post-doctoral studies with Dr. Gordon H. Dixon at the University of Calgary. He is a Professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Vice Dean for Research in the University of Louisivlle School of Medicine. He also is Director of the Center for Integrative Environmental Health Sciences. He is an internationally recognized expert in arsenic toxicology and served in multiple leadership roles in the Society of Toxicology.
Research Interests
Research interests are concentrated on arsenic toxicology, with a current focus on dysregulation of RNA metabolism in arsenic-induced skin cancer. Previously investigated DNA damage and mutagenesis by metabolically activated chemical carcinogens, characterized molecular genetics of nucleotide excision repair in humans, genetics of adenosine deaminase deficiency in humans, characterization of protamine and histone genes in rainbow trout,.and role of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase activation in atherosclerosis .
