Biography

Dr. Rabalais is a Professor of Pediatrics and Emeritus Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics. Currently he is the Associate Vice-President for the HSC Office of Educational and Professional Development. He has responsibility for the creation and oversight of faculty development activities for the four schools of the UofL Health Sciences Center; Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Public Health and Information Sciences. 

His goal is to engage, equip, and inspire faculty members to be their very best in teaching, learning, and leadership. He believes that we can magnify our impact as faculty members through our efforts to teach and lead the next generation of healthcare providers by using the best teaching and learning practices. 

He has been a faculty member in the School of Medicine since 1987 in the Department of Pediatrics. He served as the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics for 12 years (2004-2016), and Acting CEO of the University of Louisville Physicians medical school faculty practice plan for three years (2016-19) before taking on the Health Sciences Center leadership role in faculty development.

He is a 1981 graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine (New Orleans) and completed his residency and chief residency in Pediatrics at Tulane University. He completed clinical and research fellowships in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Denver Children’s Hospital (University of Colorado) in 1987. In 1998, he earned a Master’s degree in Health Administration from the University of Colorado School of Business. He served as a clinical faculty physician in the infectious diseases inpatient service at Norton Children’s Hospital until 2023.

Research Interests

How to utilize the advances of learning science over the past three decades to better equip faculty for their role as educators and leaders in the UofL academic health system.
