I am a Distinguished University Scholar and Professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology & Toxicology at the University of Louisville. I serve as Associate Vice President (AVP) for Translational Research, and AVP for Health Affairs/Research. I direct the University of Louisville Clinical Trials Unit and I direct 2 NIH-funded Centers—P20 H&T COBRE and P50 Alcohol Research Center.  I have multiple administrative roles at UofL and the Louisville VAMC.  Prior to coming to the University of Louisville, I was Chief of GI for 18 years, Vice Chair for Research for more than 5 years and Director of the NIH-funded GCRC for nearly 10 years at the University of Kentucky. I have been continuously federally funded as PI for my research since 1977.

Research Interests

I have extensive experience in both basic and clinical/ translational studies in liver disease, and am currently funded by the VA and NIH (including being PI on an NIGMS P20).  My long research career has focused on nutrition and liver disease. I also direct several clinical trials including NIH and a VA supported trials in liver disease and I direct the Clinical Trials Unit at UofL.  I have published well over 550 peer-reviewed articles and more than110 book chapters/reviews/etc. My lab was the first to describe the role of TNF in alcohol-associated hepatitis (Second most cited liver pathobiology article in HepatologyPMID: 2920991). I was the first physician member of the NIH CSR Peer Review Advisory Committee—PRAC, and I served on the NIAAA National External Advisory Committee and the NIH Council of Councils. I serve on multiple external NIH IDeA advisory boards, including chairing the EAC for the Louisianna CTR (LaCATS) and am a previous GCRC Director.
